SCRANTON - Junior Logan Bailey (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) led all scorers with 16 points, as The University of Scranton men's basketball team kicked off their 2019-20 season on Saturday night with a convincing 67-54 win over Stevenson inside the John Long Center.
In the victory, Stevenson (0-1) was able to open an early lead on the host Royals, going up 17-15 in the first nine minutes of action. Eventually, Scranton took a slim lead (21-18) with 9:16 to go in the half. After a Mustang basket made it a 21-20 game, the Royals went on a mini spurt (7-0) to open their biggest lead of the night at 28-20 after a three by sophomore Ben Bosland (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck).
Once the Royals took a sizeable edge in the first half, they never really looked back, as a three by junior Kyle DeVerna (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) with 2:56 left in the period gave Scranton their first double-digit lead of the night at 39-29. That double-digit edge held into intermission, as a lay-in by sophomore Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) with 14 seconds left gave the Royals a 43-31 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Stevenson cut the Scranton lead down to five points out of the break (45-40 with 14:11 left), but this would be the closest the Mustangs would come to the Royals lead the rest of the night.
Over the next nine-plus minutes, Scranton went on a 15-3 run capped off by a Bailey lay-in with 5:36 left to put the Royals up for good at 60-43. From there, Scranton coasted, taking a season-opening, double-digit victory over Stevenson for the second straight season.
Overall, Bailey kicked off his junior season with a solid 16 point effort on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. The junior guard also pulled down five total rebounds, had five steals and dished out three assists in the victory, as well.
Elsewhere, Danzig and DeVerna had 13 points, apiece, in the victory. Danzig pulled down a team-high seven 'boards and dished out four assists, while DeVerna went 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the victory.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for Scranton was senior Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) who finished with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Stevenson was led in the win by Norman Hughes, who had 15 points.
The University of Scranton men's basketball team returns to action on Friday, as they host the 2019 Hilton Scranton Invitational inside the Long Center. The Royals open play taking on Houghton on Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m.
