Men's Basketball's Mancuso Earns National Jesuit Player of the Week Honors
Matthew Mancuso

After taking three major awards for his performance on the week, senior forward Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) of The University of Scranton men's basketball team collected his fourth and final award late Tuesday, as he was named the National Jesuit Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 24, 2019.

This marks the second time in Mancuso's career at Scranton that he has earned the National Jesuit Player of the Week honor, as he previously earned the award on Dec. 11, 2018.

The National Jesuit Player of the Week is selected weekly by The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight (JBS) committee. The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight (JBS) is a program developed by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in 2008 to bring greater awareness of Jesuit education and its shared mission through the more than 80 games played by men's and women's basketball teams every season.

The nation's 28 Jesuit colleges and universities are part of a global network of 189 institutions of higher learning that are rooted in the traditions of academic excellence, service, and a faith that does justice. Mancuso, who was named the USBWA National Player of the Week and to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, led the Royals to a pair of road victories at Wilkes on Wednesday (91-62) and at Cabrini on Saturday (96-89) to push the team's record to 4-1 on the young season on his way to earning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week accolades, as well.

Against Wilkes, Mancuso finished with 19 points and (at the time) a career-best 19 rebounds for a double-double. Going 6-of-9 from the floor in the win, Mancuso drained two three's and also had three assists, two steals, and two blocks, as well.

But, in the victory over Cabrini, Mancuso put together the best game of his career at Scranton, finishing with a staggering 38 points and 22 rebounds, both of which were career-highs.

Mancuso's 22 total rebound performance was the best for a Royal in a game since Matt Cusano's same total rebounding effort against Catholic on Jan. 6, 1993, as the effort was the 14th best in program history. Meanwhile, the 38 point performance was the 17th best in program history in a game, matching an effort by Joe Stachnik vs. Susquehanna in 1960. The 38 point effort was also the most for a Royal in a single game since a 40-point outburst by Bill Bessoir in 1984 vs. Drew, as well.

For the year, Mancuso is averaging 20.6 points a game and 11.2 rebounds a contest, both of which lead the team on the young season and are second in each category in the Landmark Conference so far on the year.

Mancuso and the rest of the men's basketball team will take the week off for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 4 when they host York (Pa.) in the John Long Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
