SCRANTON - Junior Logan Bailey (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) led the way once again for The University of Scranton men's basketball team with a game-high 25 points, as the Royals opened the second half on an 18-1 run and never looked back in an eventual 91-60 victory in the John Long Center Saturday.
With the win, Scranton moved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference, while Elizabethtown fell to 7-5 and 0-2 in the Landmark with the defeat.
The opening frame of the contest between the Royals and Blue Jays was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams holding the lead on several occasions. When the dust settled at the end of the period, Elizabethtown held a slim 37-36 lead on Scranton, making the final shot of the period with 50 seconds left.
But, to kick-off the second half, Scranton came out on an absolute roll to ultimately put the Blue Jays away for the afternoon.
First, the Royals opened play with a quick 7-0 run, capped by a made three by sophomore Ben Bosland (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) that gave the Royals a 43-37 lead a minute and a half into the second period, prompting an Elizabethtown timeout. The timeout, however, did little to help Blue Jays, as Scranton continued to make shots, ballooning their lead out to 53-38 after a 10-1 spurt with 15:39 left.
The staggering start to the second half for Scranton was far too much for Elizabethtown to come back from the rest of the game, as the Royals continued to shoot at a high clip all period long.
When the dust cleared and the final buzzer sounded, the Royals had outscored the Blue Jays by a whopping 55-23 margin in the period to hit 91 points, their highest total in a game since scoring 93 vs. Cabrini on Nov. 23.
Overall, Bailey led the Royals scoring cause with his 25-point evening, his highest point total of the 2019-20 season to date. Bailey also shot at an incredible clip all game, finishing at 78.6 percent for the contest (11-of-14). He also dished out seven assists and pulled down six rebounds in the victory, as well.
Elsewhere, senior Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had another double-double (his seventh of the season and second straight overall), finishing with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks. Shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, Mancuso did plenty of damage at the charity stripe in the win, nailing 13 free throws on 17 attempts.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Royals were senior Kyle DeVerna ( Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and sophomore Jackson Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights), who tallied 10 points apiece. Both pulled down five rebounds, each, in the win, while Danzig dished out five assists overall.
Overall, the Royals shot an even 50 percent from the field in the victory (31-of-62), while holding E-Town to just 33.9 percent shooting (21-of-62). The Royals also limited the Blue Jays to just four made three's the entire contest, as well.
The University of Scranton men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Moravian at 7 p.m. in the John Long Center in Landmark Conference action.
