NEW HARTFORD, NY—University of Scranton sophomore Erik Meyer (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) shot a two-under-par 69 to take the opening round individual lead in the 2013 Empire 8 Conference men’s golf championships Saturday afternoon at Yahnundasis Golf Club.

It was his second sub-70 round of the young season.  He shot a career-low round of 67 to lead Scranton to a victory over Baptist Bible College at the Scranton Municipal Golf Course in Mt. Cobb on September 5.

The Royals also received a 77 from junior Charles Hudacek (Moosic, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and 80s from seniors Jamie Bresnahan (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) and junior Grant Gulick (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) to finish with a four-score total of 306, six strokes behind Elmira College (300) and one behind two-time defending champion St. John Fisher (306).

Stevens Institute of Technology is fourth (326), followed by Susquehanna University (329), Utica College (337), Nazareth College (338), Moravian College (357), and Houghton College (386).

Second-round action continues tomorrow morning.  The final 36 holes will be played during the 2013 spring semester, with the eventual Empire 8 Conference team champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
