BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Tyler Huggins (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) shot a 7-over-par 79 in difficult conditions to lead The University of Scranton men's golf team in the first round of the Empire 8 Conference championships at Timber Banks Golf Course.

The Royals finished the day with a four-player total of 333, good for third place, one stroke ahead of Moravian. St. John Fisher leads with 313, followed by Stevens Tech in second with 322. The second round will be played on Sunday, with the final two rounds played during the spring semester.

Huggins overcame windy conditions and difficult greens to shoot even par on the back nine after a slow start. His 79 was good for a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Karl Deuble from St. John Fisher holds a one-shot lead after a 2-over 74.

Sophomore Kyle Hayes (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) finished with 83 and is tied for 11th, junior Michael Boland (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) is tied for 14th after shooting 84, and senior Steven Lambrinakos (Stamford, Conn./Trinity) and junior David Harris (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) tied for the team's fourth score with 87.

Sunday's second round will start at 9:40 a.m. at Timber Banks Golf Course.
