MOOSIC, Pa. – Four members of The University of Scranton men's golf team broke 80 in the opening day of the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational to help Scranton's two teams to sit sixth and seventh after the opening round of the two-day tournament at Glenmaura National Golf Club.
The Royals' "B" team is in sixth after a four-player total of 315, while the "A" team is one spot behind after shooting 323. McDaniel leads with an 8-over-par 292, followed by Rosemont (294), Muhlenberg (296), Swarthmore (305), King's (310) and the two Scranton teams.
Senior Tyler Huggins (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) continued his strong spring with a career-low 4-over-par 75 on the par-71, 6,308-yard layout to lead the "B" team. He has now shot 78 or better in four of his past five rounds.
Sophomore Kyle Hayes (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) added a 76, and seniors Kevin Nardella (Spring Brook Township, Pa./North Pocono) and Steven Lambrinakos (Stamford, Conn./Trinity) added a pair of 82s to round out the "B" team scoring.
Junior Michael Boland (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) shot 5-over 76 to lead the "A" team while playing in his first event of the spring. Sophomore Erik Ridley (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) finished with 77, and sophomore Andrew Milisits (Northampton, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and freshman Patrick Budicini (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) both shot 84 to round out the team's top four.
Corey Palma of King's leads the individual leaderboard after a 3-under 68, one shot ahead of Ian Simon of Muhlenberg and two ahead of Rosemont's Jordan Cook.
The second and final round begins Monday at 9 a.m. at Glenmaura National Golf Club.
