Senior Michael Boland (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of the men's golf team and freshman David Gerace (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) of the men's track & field both won Landmark Conference individual championships over the weekend. As a result, they have been named University of Scranton co-Athletes of the Week.
Boland became the fourth golfer in Scranton history to win an individual conference championship when he claimed the Landmark Conference title with a two-day total of 78-78 – 156 on Saturday and Sunday at Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, Pa. He joins his head coach, Ed Karpovich, who won Middle Atlantic Conference titles in 1974 and 1976, Will Carey (1988) and J.T. Yarem (2005) as Royals to win a conference title.
Gerace became the first men's track & field athlete in school history to claim a conference title when he won the discus at the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday. He won with a throw of 41.96 meters (137 feet, 8 inches) to become the first conference champion – indoor or outdoor – for the men's track & field team since the program was announced more than a year ago. Gerace's gold medal-winning throw was easily his best of the season.
