Freshman attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) had a big week to help The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team post a pair of victories. As a result, he has been named the University's Athlete of the Week.
Kirkwood scored six goals to help the Royals post a pair of victories in their first game action in more than two weeks. In the Royals' four victories this season, he has scored a total of 12 goals.
On Thursday at Marywood, Kirkwood scored three times as the Royals (4-2, 1-0 Landmark Conference) built a dominant lead by early in the fourth quarter en route to an 11-5 win. He opened the scoring at the 6:59 mark of the first period, then scored a pair of goals 57 seconds apart early in the third period as Scranton eventually took an 11-2 lead early in the fourth.
Kirkwood finished that game with seven shots, three of which were on goal.
On Saturday in the Landmark Conference opener against Goucher, Kirkwood again scored three times as the Royals posted an 8-4 come-from-behind victory. He scored with 56 seconds left in the first period to break a scoreless tie and later added two second-half goals as the Royals turned a 3-2 halftime deficit into a victory.
Kirkwood finished the win over the Gophers with a career-high nine shots, four of which were on goal.
For the season, Kirkwood has a team-high 16 goals and also leads the team with 42 shots.
The men's lacrosse team will be back in action on Tuesday, March 28, when the Royals host SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
