A career-high seven goals in a big Landmark Conference victory were enough to make the long holiday weekend a happy one for University of Scranton men's lacrosse sophomore attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep). The break became even more enjoyable on Monday as Kirkwood was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week for men's lacrosse.
Kirkwood posted that career high in a 16-6 win over Catholic on Thursday, March 29, at Fitzpatrick Field. He added an assist for eight points, which were also a career high. His seven goals were one shy of matching the school's single-game record, which was achieved four times, most recently in 2006.
The game started slowly for Kirkwood, who scored once in the first half as the Royals (7-4, 1-1 Landmark) took a 6-4 lead after 30 minutes. But he came out of the break on fire, scoring three times in the first 5:28 of the third period as Scranton started to pull away. He then had three goals and an assist in the fourth period as the Royals put the game away by outscoring Catholic, 5-0.
For the season, Kirkwood has 33 goals and 37 points, both team highs. His 33 goals are the most by a Royal since Kyle Frank scored 34 in 2012.
Kirkwood and the Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4, when they host Misericordia in a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
