Junior midfielder Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) scored a career-high five goals on Thursday, but it wasn't enough as The University of Scranton dropped an 11-8 decision to visiting DeSales in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Weiss Field.
Scranton (2-1) took a 2-0 lead with 4:43 remaining in the first quarter on Thursday behind goals from Elefonte and sophomore Daniel Mallay (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) before DeSales (2-0) rallied with three goals in the final three minutes of the period to hold a 3-2 edge at the end of the stanza.
Elefonte's second goal of the game 1:44 into the second quarter leveled the contest at 3-3, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the final 18 seconds of the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead into the halftime break.
Scranton came out strong in the third quarter, firing off 15 shots to eight for DeSales and the Royals netted four of the first five goals of the period with an unassisted goal by senior Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) at the 8:22 mark giving the hosts a 7-6 lead.
Once again, the Bulldogs pushed back late scoring twice in the final 1:48 of the quarter to take an 8-7 edge into the final stanza.
DeSales extended its lead to 10-7 with a pair of tallies in the opening 2:09 of the fourth period before Elefonte netted his fifth marker of the day with 11:22 remaining to bring Scranton to within two goals.
That would mark the end of the scoring for the Royals those as the Bulldogs capped the scoring on Joe Neggia's game-high sixth goal with 3:24 left on the clock.
Dolan finished with two points on a goal and an assist while freshman Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) also scored for the Royals.
Sophomore Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) won a game-high 13 face-offs and led all players with 10 groundballs while junior Ian Graham (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and junior Gordon Paul (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) tied for a game-high with three caused turnovers apiece. Paul also scooped up six groundballs in the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper T.J. Grogan (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) made 10 saves in the loss while Bulldogs' goalie Matt Barry made 21 stops to claim the win.
The Royals outshot DeSales by a 45-41 margin and held a 48-39 advantage in ground balls for the contest. The hosts also went 22-for-25 on clearing attempts while the Bulldogs were 25-for-32 on clearances.
