Comeback Bid Falls Short for Men’s Lacrosse in 11-10 Overtime Defeat at Montclair St.

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - Four different University of Scranton men's lacrosse players scored two goals, apiece, as the Royals rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime at Montclair State Saturday, but the host Red Hawks scored in the sudden death frame to take an 11-10 victory.

With the defeat, the Royals dropped to 1-3 overall for the year, while Montclair State improved to 4-0 with the thrilling victory.

After an even first half that saw the game knotted up at 4-4 entering intermission, Scranton was first to score out of the break when junior Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) tallied an unassisted score with seven minutes to go in the third period to put the Royals up, 5-4.

But, Montclair State proceeded to go on a scoring run, tallying four unanswered goals to end the quarter to take an 8-5 lead over the Royals entering the final period. And, to start the fourth, Montclair continued the scoring rally, scoring again to make it a 9-5 contest.

Down by four, the Royals slowly began to chip away at the Montclair State lead, scoring three straight to slice the Red Hawks' lead down to 9-8 with 8:07 to go in regulation.

Montclair State, however, scored on a man-up situation with 7:35 left to go back up two at 10-8. That lead held for the Red Hawks until the final two minutes of regulation where Scranton made a charge.

First, with 1:50 left, sophomore Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored off an assist from senior Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) to cut the Montclair lead down to 10-9. On the ensuing face-off, Scranton was victorious, and on their possession, Bouhall scored off an assist from Lukasiewicz to tie the game back up at 10-10 with 55 seconds to go in regulation.

In the final moments of the game, Scranton won another face-off, then after a turnover got the ball back. But, a shot by the Royals with eight seconds left went wide, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, Montclair won the first faceoff via a violation, then 51 seconds into the overtime, scored the game-winner, as Christian Boyle scored to win the game for the Red Hawks.

Overall, Elefonte, Bouhall, junior Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J,/Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) all scored two goals, apiece, to lead Scranton on the afternoon. Elefonte, meanwhile, did a little bit of everything in the defeat, tallying two assists, seven ground balls and causing two turnovers.

Elsewhere, Lukasiewicz and freshman Nicholas Donato (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) also scored goals for Scranton, while sophomore Sean Crotty (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had an assist. Lukasiewicz also had four ground balls in the loss, as well, while in net, junior Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) made 15 saves on the afternoon.

Montclair State was led in the victory by Boyle, who had four goals.

The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, as they finally host their home season opener at Weiss Field against Grove City. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.
