WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Senior Henry Bonilla (Fairless Hills, Pa./The Pennington School) scored in the first half, and sophomore Jeremy Mammen (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) added a goal late in the second half, as the University of Scranton men's soccer team rolled to a 2-0, shutout victory over Wilkes on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Scranton moved to 7-1 overall on the year, while Wilkes fell to 2-7 with the defeat.
In the opening frame, the Royals came out firing from the start offensively, but it took 40 minutes for Bonilla to finally cash in on a shot on goal, which was the fourth of the period for Scranton at that point.
On the play, Mammen was credited with an assist, the first of his career. For Bonilla, it was his fifth goal of the 2016 season, and his third game-winning goal in the last four matches for Scranton.
Scranton continued to control the match in the second half, outshooting Wilkes, 11-2, overall.
In the 84th minute, however, Mammen finally put the Colonels away for the afternoon with his score, the first of his career. On the goal, sophomore Kieran Bracken (Stamford, Conn./South Kent) was credited with an assist, the first of his career, as well.
Overall in the win, Scranton outshot Wilkes by a large 20-4 advantage and had a 14-3 edge on corner kicks. In net, senior Colin Homola (Massapequa, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) played most of the match (74 and a half minutes), making two saves in the victory.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Elizabethtown in a Landmark Conference match at Fitzpatrick Field. Action gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
