SCRANTON, Pa - Visiting Drew rallied back from a 1-0 halftime deficit, scoring two goals within four minutes of each other in the second half to upend the University of Scranton men's soccer team, 2-1, on Wednesday night in a Landmark Conference match.
With the defeat, Scranton fell to 7-3 overall, 1-2 in the Landmark Conference, while Drew improved to 6-2-2 with the victory, 1-0-1 in the Landmark.
To begin the match, Scranton controlled possession throughout the first half, at one point outshooting Drew by a 4-0 advantage.
The second shot that the Royals took in the period was sliced into the net by junior Gavin Coutts (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), who played a nice cross in front by Jonathan Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) to give Scranton the early 1-0 edge. For Coutts, it was his second goal of the year, while Roberts recorded his fourth assist of the year on the play.
The 1-0 lead held into intermission, but in the second half, Drew began to creep back into the match. Following three straight saves on Scranton shots, Drew scored back-to-back goals in the 62nd minute and the 64th minute to go up 2-1.
Once the Rangers took the lead, they locked down on defense, with Scranton only taking one shot on offense the rest of the match, as the Rangers hung on for the one-score victory.
Overall, Scranton had an 8-7 edge on shots, and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Landmark Conference play continues for the University of Scranton men's soccer team on Saturday, as they travel to Susquehanna. Things get underway at 3:30 p.m.
