Junior Connor Casey (Hatfield, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) of the University of Scranton men's soccer team had a huge week for the Royals, as Scranton captured their second straight Landmark Conference Championship with a pair of wins over Drew and Elizabethtown in tournament play.
With two goals in two matches, Casey has been named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending Nov. 6, 2016. For Casey, it marks the second time in his career he has earned Athlete of the Week honors (the last came on Nov. 16, 2015).
Casey started the week scoring the first goal in a 2-1 win for the Royals over Drew on Wednesday night in the Landmark semifinals.
The junior forward, however, scored the game-winning goal early in the first half at Elizabethtown on Saturday night, giving Scranton their second straight Landmark title in a 1-0 win.
Casey, who has now scored four goals on the 2016 season, has saved goals throughout his career for the moments Scranton has needed them the most - in elimination tournament matches.
In his last four Landmark Conference tournament matches, Casey has scored a goal, including scoring the game-winning tally in back-to-back Landmark Conference championship matches. Casey also scored the game-winner in Scranton's 2-0 win in the NCAA Tournament First Round last year, as well.
For his efforts in this seasons tournament, Casey was also named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Landmark Championship, as well.
Casey and the Royals now await who and where they will play in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, which will begin on Saturday. Pairings will be announced on Monday afternoon.
