Men’s Soccer Draws Penn State Behrend in First Round of NCAA Tournament

The University of Scranton men's soccer team will take part in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second straight season, as the Royals will travel to SUNY-Cortland this weekend for a First Round match-up with Penn State Behrend. The First Round contest will be played on Saturday.

In the other First Round match, host SUNY-Cortland will take on Morrisville State. The winners of the First Round matches on Saturday will advance to a Second Round match-up on Sunday. Times for all three matches are to be announced.

Scranton, 14-3-1 overall and champions of the Landmark Conference, come into the NCAA Tournament on a tear, riding an eight-match unbeaten streak into their First Round contest. The Royals clinched their second straight Landmark title on Saturday night, besting fellow NCAA Tournament participant, Elizabethtown, 1-0, on the road.

In the scoring column, Scranton has been led by senior Henry Bonilla (Fairless Hills, Pa./The Pennington School) who has scored seven goals during the 2016 season. The Royals also boast a strong defensive unit, as they've recorded nine shutouts, the ninth coming in the Landmark Title match on Saturday night.

Penn State Behrend, 17-1-3 overall, also earned an automatic bid to the tournament field after winning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title on Saturday over Medaille, 4-0.

The Lions also enter the NCAA Tournament on a roll, as they dropped their lone match of the season to Grove City on Sept. 6. In all, Penn State Behrend enters tournament play on a 16-match unbeaten streak and an eight match winning streak, as well.

Offensively, the Lions are led by senior Anthony Crivelli, who has scored 11 goals and added five assists for a 27 point total for the year.

In program history, this marks the 16th time that the Royals will play in the NCAA Tournament and the first time they've played on the national stage in back-to-back seasons since a string of 11 straight appearances from 1976 through 1987.
