Sophomore defender Patrick Prinner (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) scored in the 87th minute to complete a second-half comeback as The University of Scranton men's soccer team opened Weiss Field with a 3-2 win over Arcadia in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Prinner's header off a corner kick by junior midfielder Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) sent the Royals and fans home happy after the first University event held on the brand new Weiss Field at the Quinn Athletics Campus.
It wasn't easy in the last three-plus minutes, however, as Arcadia hit the post on a header with 2:05 remaining. From there, Scranton was able to run out the clock by maintaining possession deep in the Knights' end of the field.
Freshman midfielder Michael Castaldi (Media, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored in the 73rd minute to knot the match at 2-2 after Arcadia had taken a 2-1 lead in the first half. Castaldi swooped in from the left side to knock home a short shot off a cross from junior midfielder Nick Kapelewski (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury).
Arcadia took a 1-0 lead with a goal just 63 seconds into the match. Scranton answered in the 18th minute when junior midfielder Riley Smith (New Hope, Pa./New Hope Solebury) got control of a header pass by junior defender Christian Savino (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and scored from eight yards out.
The Knights regained the lead at 2-1 on a goal in the 35th minute and held that lead for 38 minutes until Castaldi's equalizer.
Scranton held a 14-10 edge in shots and 9-4 in corner kicks.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday at Weiss Field when they host Alvernia at 3 p.m
