Junior midfielder Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) of The University of Scranton men's soccer team played a big role in keeping the team's playoff hopes alive as the Royals won a pair of Landmark Conference games last week. For his efforts, he has been honored as The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
With Scranton's postseason chances on the line, Roberts came up with a strong performance on Wednesday, scoring twice to lead the Royals to a 3-0 victory over Drew at Weiss Field.
Roberts opened the scoring in the 10th minute, heading a shot past the Rangers' goalkeeper.
With Scranton holding a 2-0 lead against the ninth-ranked team in the region, Roberts iced the victory with an unassisted goal in the 84th minute, racing down the field with the ball and lacing a shot that was too strong for Drew's keeper to handle.
Roberts and the Royals continued their late season surge with a 1-0 victory at Susquehanna on Saturday, improving to 5-8-2 on the season and leveling their Landmark Conference record at 3-3.
Roberts, who tops Scranton's scoring chart with 13 points on four goals and five assists, has now scored four goals in the Royals' last five games to lead Scranton back into playoff contention heading into the final game of the regular season.
Roberts and the Royals host Juniata on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Landmark Conference match needing a win and a Moravian loss or tie to qualify for the postseason tournament.
