SCRANTON, Pa. – Seniors Michael Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) scored two goals apiece as The University of Scranton men's soccer team (2-0) pulled away from Marywood (0-3) in a 4-0 victory over the Pacers on Wednesday night at Weiss Field in Scranton.
This marked the first ever meeting between the two programs and the Royals have now started 2-0 in four consecutive seasons.
The multi-goal game was the second of Roberts' career after he also scored a pair in a 3-0 victory versus Drew on Oct. 17, 2018, while this is the first career multi-goal game for Donnelly.
Scranton came out strong in this one with four shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first seven plus minutes of the contest, but Marywood kept the game scoreless for the time being. In the 22nd minute, freshman Christian Arcos (Bayonne, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) played a one touch pass to Nick Kapelewski (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and the latter fed Roberts in the box who slid a shot home to open the scoring. The Royals outshot the Pacers by an 8-2 margin over the opening 45 minutes.
The Pacers had a chance in the early stages of the second half, but senior goalie Blake Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep) denied a shot from Zac Lloyd who had come in alone on the keeper. Roberts struck again in the 57th minute as he played a ball in the air and made a nifty move to beat a defender before beating Marywood goalie Mike Gallagher far post. Donnelly scored twice in the final five minutes of the contest with the first coming in the 85th minute after receiving a pass from Justin Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep) on the edge of the box and sending a shot past Gallagher. The senior tallied the fourth and final goal of the night with nine seconds remaining after playing a ball off a goal kick from Hammert and getting behind the defense.
The Royals held a 20-7 shot advantage in the game and registered 12 shots in the second half. Donnelly paced the hosts with four shots, while Arcos had three. Lloyd recorded three shots to lead Marywood.
Hammert and sophomore Jake Hodlofski (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) combined on the shutout for Scranton with the former making three saves in the second half. Hodlofski added one save of his own in the opening stanza.
Head coach Matt Pivirotto's squad will hit the road to battle Neumann in non-conference action on Saturday, Sept. 7. Opening kick is set for 4 p.m.
