TOWSON, Md. – The University of Scranton men's soccer team (6-3-1, 1-1 Landmark) scored a season-high six goals and cruised to a 6-1 win over the Goucher Gophers (1-9, 0-2 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field in Towson.
The six goals is the most scored by the Royals since a 6-0 win over Elms (Mass.) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 10, 2012.
Scranton opened the scoring in the 18th minute as sophomore Michael Castaldi (Media, Pa./Malvern Prep) collected a loose ball off an initial shot from senior Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) and found the back of the net to make it a 1-0 game. The Royals added to the lead in the 24th minute as freshman Christian Arcos (Bayonne, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) made his way through the defense with a series of nifty moves near the top of the box and beat the keeper with his fourth goal of the season. Head coach Matt Pivirotto's squad held a 13-0 shot advantage in the second half.
The Royals broke the game open in the early stages of the second half with two goals in 31 seconds to extend the lead to 4-0. Junior Aidan Thornell (Summit, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) struck first 1:27 into the final stanza as he sent a header into the net off a corner kick from Arcos and Roberts netted his team-leading fifth goal of the year shortly after as he ripped a shot past diving Goucher goalie Joe May. Senior Justin Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep) made it a 5-0 game in the 68th minute as he dribbled to the near post and slid a shot past May for his first goal of the season. Sophomore Mike Cortez (Secaucus, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) concluded the scoring for the Royals in the 73rd minute off a feed from freshman Kieran Francis (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey). The Gophers got on the board with a goal from Isaiah Perry in the 84th minute.
Scranton held a 20-7 shot advantage in the contest led by three shots apiece from Arcos, Roberts and senior Nick Kapelewski (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). The trio of sophomore Jake Hodlofski (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep), senior Anthony Cassano (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) and senior Alex Dadourian (Summit, N.J./Summit) made one save apiece in net for the Royals.
The men's soccer team hits the road to battle Haverford on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. and resumes Landmark Conference play with a 1 p.m. tilt versus Moravian on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Weiss Field.
