ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The University of Scranton returned to the pool for the first time since December 2 with a convincing, 160-91 victory over host Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon. The Royals won the first six events of Saturday's competition to pull away from the Blue Jays to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Matthew Mills (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) paced Scranton with a pair of individual wins, finishing first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:01.89 before leading the field in the 400 yard individual medley by posting a time of 4:28.78.
The Royals had seven other swimmers win individual events. Joe Vannucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:21.49, Alexander Rigione (Fairfield, Conn./Saint Joseph) won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:44.82, and Michael Ramsthaler (Florham Park, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) finished first in the 100 yard backstroke by clocking in at 56.23 seconds.
Zachary Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa./Cristo Rey Philadelphia) brought home a first place result in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:33.89 while John Cannilla (Florham Park, N.J./Oratory Prep) topped the field in the 200 yard backstroke at 2:10.29.
Timothy Quigley (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) won the 200 yard breaststroke with a pace of 2:23.67 while John Fimmano (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) finished first in the 500 yard freestyle by clocking in at 5:13.08.
Scranton also won the 200 yard medley relay as Ramsthaler, Patrick Blaser (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), Quigley, and Mills posted a time of 1:41.73.
Ramsthaler also brought home a second place finish in the 200 yard backstroke while Quigley did the same in the 100 yard butterfly. Blaser added a runner-up finish in the 500 yard freestyle race while Joe Cavanaugh (Staten Island, N.Y./Saint Peters) placed second in the 400 meter individual medley, finishing just behind Mills in the race.
Bobby McLoughlin (Morrisville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) brought home a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in the 100 yard freestyle and in the 100 yard freestyle events.
Gregory Spicka (Morris Plains, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke while Raymond Diorio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) was the runner-up in the 50 yard freestyle competition.
The Royals finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay as Brayan Winiarz (Long Pond, Pa./Evergreen Community), Ramsthaler, Diorio, and Mills finished just .12 seconds behind Elizabethtown's winning team.
Scranton will make the short trip to Marywood University on Friday night to take on the host Pacers along with Misericordia University starting at 5:00 p.m.
