Sophomore Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) of The University of Scranton men's tennis team had a strong start to his season over the weekend, winning both the #1 singles and #1 doubles championships at the King's Fall Invitational. For his performance, he has been selected as the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for men's tennis.
In the singles tournament, McGurrin defeated Danny Lynn of DeSales, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals before topping Manhattanville's Juan Huertas in the championship match, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
In doubles play, he teamed with senior Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) to post two more victories while winning another title. In the semifinals, McGurrin and Ochalski bested Susquehanna's Alexander Dove and Alexander Cocolas, 8-2 before defeating Charles LeMantia and Vince Paetow of Cabrini in the final, 8-3.
This week's honor is the second weekly Landmark award of McGurrin's career. He was also named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week on April 16 this past spring.
McGurrin and the Royals return to the court on Wednesday with a non-conference match at Manhattanville starting at 4 p.m.
