PURCHASE, N.Y. – The University of Scranton men's tennis team defeated host Manhattanville 6-3 in the first dual match of the season for both squads on Wednesday as the Royals won the top two doubles flights before winning singles contest no. 1 through 4.
Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep), Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), and Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) won twice apiece to lead Scranton (1-0) to the victory.
McGurrin and Ochalski notched an 8-3 victory at no. 1 doubles while Swope and Harkins battled their way to an 8-6 decision at no. 2 doubles for the Royals.
Manhattanville (0-1) secured their first point of the match with an 8-2 win at no. 3 singles.
In singles action, McGurrin won at the top pairing, 6-1, 7-5, while Ochalski battled to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win at the no. 2 pairing for his second victory of the day.
At no. 3 singles, Swope bested his opponent, 6-4, 6-1 while Harkins cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at no. 4 singles.
The Valiants picked up their final two points of the match with a 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 win at no. 5 singles and a straight set victory at no. 6 singles.
Scranton will travel to Messiah on Saturday for a non-conference match starting at 9:30 a.m.
