Senior Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) of the men's tennis team had a big weekend in leading the Royals to a pair of Landmark Conference victories, and for his efforts, he was named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 14, 2019, on Monday
For Harkins, this marks the second time in his career as a Royal that he has earned Scranton Athlete of the Week accolades, as he nabbed the honor last season on April 23, 2018.
This past weekend, Harkins went 4-0 combined in doubles and singles play to help Scranton secure a bid into the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs, as the Royals rolled past Moravian (9-0) on Saturday and Elizabethtown (8-1) on Sunday.
With his pair of singles victories, both of which came in the third position in the line-up and in straight sets, Harkins improved to 16-1 for the 2018-19 season in singles action, winning his 11 matches overall.
A perfect 7-0 in Landmark Conference singles contests for the year, Harkins' 16 wins are tied for the second most in a season in program history, as he has now captured 54 singles victories in his career at Scranton, tying him for the second highest mark in that category in program history.
The Royals, who are now 9-6 overall and finished the Landmark Conference regular season with a 5-2 ledger, return to action on April 24 at home against Oneonta St. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
