WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Patrick O'Mara both captured singles titles for The University of Scranton men's tennis team at the King's Fall Invitational that was held over the weekend.
This marks the second straight year that McGurrin that has won a singles title at the invitational after winning the No. 1 singles championship a year ago.
Once again playing at the No. 1 singles flight, McGurrin topped Juan Huertas of Manhattanville 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. The junior registered a 6-2, 6-1 win in the opening round and topped DeSales' Danny Lynn by a 7-6, 6-1 count in the semifinal match.
At the No. 6 singles flight, O'Mara captured a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Manhattanville's Dylan Crowley in the finals. O'Mara defeated Cabrini's Dalton Roberto (6-0, 6-0) and Susquehanna's Sam Sidle (6-1, 6-3) en route to the finals.
Freshman Nathan Tauber advanced to the finals in No. 5 singles action before dropping a 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 heartbreaker to Nick Schlapak of Manhattanville. Tauber defeated Cabrini's Matthew DeMaria in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) in the opening round and Jason Homschek of King's (6-0, 6-3) in the semifinals.
The Royals open the dual meet portion of their schedule with a match at Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
