SOUTH ABINGTON TWP., Pa. – The University of Scranton men's tennis team (1-2) won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over Clarks Summit University (0-1) on Thursday afternoon at Birchwood Tennis Club in South Abington Township.
The match marked the first for the Royals in the spring portion of their 2019-20 schedule.
Junior Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Patrick O'Mara (Pleasantville, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) rolled to an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles action, while sophomore Daniel Scala (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley)/freshman Nathan Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area) came away with an 8-2 victory against the Defenders' Evan Griffen/Jordan Johansen at the No. 2 doubles spot. Senior Sebastian Barry (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Abington Heights) and freshman Steven Prosperino (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem Central) captured an 8-2 win in No. 3 doubles action.
McGurrin swept Evan Michel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Tauber defeated Griffen 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot. O'Mara, sophomore Sal Sullivan (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) and freshman Michael Remley (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) also recorded singles victories for Scranton at No. 4-6 singles.
The Royals will battle Colorado College to kick off the team's spring break trip in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, March. 14.
