CARLISLE, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's track & field finished third out of eight teams on Sunday at the DuCharme Invitational hosted by Dickinson College. The Royals posted 10 top-10 results on the day and totaled 44 points to finish behind Dickinson (200) and Elizabethtown (187) in the overall competition.
Senior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View), the reigning Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Week, enjoyed another strong performance to lead the Royals, earning a runner-up finish in the long jump placing third in the 55 meter dash, and bring home a fourth place result in the triple jump.
Merli posted a mark of 6.24 meters in the long jump to finish second while his leap of 12.51 meters in the triple jump placed him fourth in the field. In the 55 meter dash, he clocked in at 6.99 seconds for his third top-four finish of the day.
Senior Connor Sharp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) finished fourth in the 55 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 7.00 seconds to clock in just 0.01 seconds behind Merli.
Sharp also brought home a fourth place result in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.77 seconds.
Sophomore Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) placed third in the 800 meter run, crossing the stripe in 2:02.46 while freshman Nicholas Socci (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) finished sixth in the race.
The Royals placed a pair of runners in the top-eight of the 5,000 meter run as junior Aidan Helie (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall College H.S.) and senior D.J. Guelph (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, led by Helie's pace of 17:39.20.
Junior Maxwell Greene (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) picked up a top-10 finish in the one mile run, posting a mark of 9:28.62 to claim ninth place.
Scranton will compete in Cornell's Marc Denault Invitational next Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y., the team's final tune-up before the Landmark Conference Indoor Championships.
