Men’s Track & Field Prepares for Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships

The University of Scranton men's track & field team is putting the final touches on its preparations for this coming weekend's Landmark Conference Championships hosted by Goucher in Towson, Maryland. The Royals have been tabbed fifth in the pre-championship poll after finishing sixth at last season's championship meet.

Defending conference champion Moravian was named the preseason favorite with 57 points and five first place votes while Elizabethtown came in second in the balloting with 41 points and a pair of first place votes as chosen by the conference's seven head coaches.

Scranton, which claimed 19 points in the pre-championship poll, is looking to continue to make strides in the Landmark Conference Championship standings in its second season of competition led by head coach Ozzie Brown.

The Royals head into this weekend's two-day meet with four competitors ranking in the top-five of their respective events in the Landmark Conference this spring.

Sophomore Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) is second in the 800 meter run with a season-best time of 1:54.48, just .01 seconds behind conference leader Justin Beasley-Turner of Moravian.

Senior Andrew Charway (Irvington, N.J./Christ The King Prep) check in to this weekend's action in third in the 100 meter dash with a mark of 11.25 seasons.  He also ranks sixth in the 200 meter dash at 22.94 seconds.

Senior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) is currently fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.27 meters while also sitting seventh in the triple jump at 11.20 meters.

Freshman Shane McKeon (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) enters the conference championship meet fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:57.89 while classmate Phil Cocco (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) is sixth in the shot put with a mark of 13.12 meters.

The Royals also sport a pair of relay teams that rank in the top-five in the conference. 

Scranton is fourth in the 4x100 meter relay with sophomore T.J. Toles (Freeport, N.Y./Chaminade), freshman Ian Lewis (Scranton, Pa./Scranton), Merli, and senior Connor Sharp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) clocking a season-best time of 44.31 seconds.

The Royals are fifth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:33.11, a mark posted by Charway, sophomore Zachary Mead (Montrose, Pa./Montrose), freshman Alexander Belotte (Elmont, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), and Kinback on April 12 at Moravian.
