Bill Burke joined the track and field team at his alma mater for its inaugural season in 2016-17 as an assistant coach and works with the team's distance runners.

Burke is also the University's men's and women's cross country head coach, having led the men's team since 2005 and taking over as the women's head coach two years later. In his time with the cross country program, he has led the Royals' women to a Landmark Conference championship in 2009 and coached 20 all-conference runners and three NCAA qualifiers.

Burke is widely regarded by coaches and runners for his extension knowledge of long-distance training techniques, nutrition and up-to-date practices of strength and conditioning.

Prior to 2005, Burke served as the cross country coach at Scranton Prep, where he led the Cavaliers to four Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class AA cross country championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004) and 12 PIAA District II titles. He also produced three state champions in track and field and cross country and 17 state medalists.

Burke, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from the University and a Master of Arts degree in American history from the University of Notre Dame, was a two-time NCAA all-regional selection (1984, 1985) during his career (1982-1985) as a Royal. He is the first Scranton runner to qualify for the NCAA Division III championships, where he finished 89th overall in 1984, and placed third at both the 1982 and 1984 Middle Atlantic Conference championships. He is also a member of the University’s athletics Wall of Fame.

In 2005, he was named to the Scranton Times-Tribune list of the Top 25 coaches all-time in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Bill and his wife, Maripat, reside in Scranton with their four children: Bill, Jack, Peter and Maeve.
