Schuyler Smith (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) continued the strong start to his senior season by leading The University of Scranton men's cross country team with a sixth-place finish at the Cougar Classic at Misericordia on Saturday. As a result, Smith has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for men's cross country.
Smith completed the 8,000-meter course in 20:08.76 while leading the Royals for the second time in three events this season. He has now been the Royals top runner twice this season after competing in just two events last year. It was also the first top-10 finish of Smith's career.
Thanks to Smith's effort, the Royals finished second in the six-team event. Eight Scranton runners finished in the top 17 in the event.
The men's cross country team will return to action on Friday, Sept. 29, when the Royals compete in the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
