LEBANON, Pa. – In a preview of the Landmark Conference championship course later this season, The University of Scranton men's cross country team had a strong showing at the Dutchmen Invitational on Saturday, finishing third at Union Canal Tunnel Park.
The Royals finished the event with 74 points, trailing only first-place Juniata (40 points) and the host, Lebanon Valley (52). Fourth-place Susquehanna was just a blip in the Royals' rearview mirror, finishing with 152 points.
Junior Eric Bartlett (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) was Scranton's top finisher, placing sixth for his second straight top-10 finish. He completed the 8,000-meter course in 27:00.71, just 10 seconds off his career best for that distance.
Junior Chris Baldwin (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) was the second Royal across the line, finishing 13th in 2:34.69. Fellow junior Zach Gutekunst (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was right on Baldwin's heels, finishing 14th with a time of 27:34.92. Baldwin and Gutekunst both set career bests for 8,000 meters.
Freshman Shane McKeon (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) gave Scranton a fourth top-20 finish by placing 19th with a time of 27:59.12. Sophomore Jack Patwell (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) rounded out the team's top five by placing 22nd in 28:04.40.
The men's cross country team will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when the Royals run in the Cougar Classic at 10:30 a.m. at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa.
