BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's cross country team had another solid outing on Saturday, finishing 12th in the White Race at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
The Royals finished the event with 335 points to finish in the top one-third of teams in the 37-team event. Ramapo captured the title with 109 points.
Junior Zach Gutekunst (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was the top finisher for Scranton, placing 37th by completing the 8,000-meter course in 27:23. Gutekunst's effort was a new career best at 8,000 meters by nearly 12 seconds.
Freshman Shane McKeon (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) was second across the line for the purple and white, finishing 66th with a time of 28:03. Fellow freshman John Thomas Clark (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) was two spots back in 68th with a time of 28:04, his best time at 8,000 meters in his young career.
Freshman Sean Connolly (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate H.S.) was Scranton's fourth runner, finishing 84th overall with a time of 28:19, also a career-best. And sophomore Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) rounded out the team's top five in 115th place, finishing in 28:53.
The men's cross country team will now have two weeks to prepare for the Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.
