LOGAN TWP., N.J. – The University of Scranton men's cross country team ran to 36th place at Saturday's Inter-Regional Border Battle, hosted by Rowan University at Gloucester County Dream Park.
Junior Zach Gutekunst (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was Scranton's top finisher, placing 196th. He completed the 8,000-meter course in 27:20.14, a personal best for that distance by three seconds.
Freshman Shane McKeon (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) was next across the line for the Royals, finishing 266th with a time of 28:00.53, less than two seconds off his career best at 8,000 meters. Fellow freshman John Thomas Clark (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) was the third Royal, placing 274th in 28:04.68, matching his best time for 8,000 meters.
Sophomore Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) was Scranton's fourth finisher with a time of 28:07.86, good for 278th. It was a personal best for him at that distance by 22 seconds. Freshman Sean Connolly (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate H.S.) rounded out the team's top five in 291st with a time of 28:21.20, two seconds off his personal best.
The Royals finished the event with 1,079 points in the 42-team event. Johns Hopkins took the team title with 80 points, edging SUNY Geneseo, which finished with 95 points. Sean O'Connor of RPI won the individual title with a time of 25:00.1.
The men's cross country team will now have two weeks to prepare for the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Union Canal Tunnel Park in Lebanon, Pa.
