CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Scranton softball team dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions on the second day of its Spring Break trip on Sunday, falling to St. Mary's (Ind.) and Transylvania. The Royals are now 2-2 on the young season.
Game 1 vs. St. Mary's
In Sunday's opener, St. Mary's rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Scranton, 3-1 and remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0.
Scranton maintained the one-run edge until the home sixth when the Belles took the lead on a two-run triple before adding an insurance run on an RBI infield single.
St. Mary's retired the Royals in order in the top of the seventh to close out the comeback victory.
Brogan, Molly Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock), and Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) accounted for Scranton's three hits on the game with a double by Brogan standing as the Royals' only extra-base hit of the contest.
Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) went the distance in the circle for Scranton, surrendering three runs on eight hits while fanning five batters.
Game 2 vs. Transylvania
In Sunday's second contest, Transylvania scored one run in each of the first three innings and made them stand to improve to 4-2 on the season with the 3-1 victory.
The Pioneers got a leadoff home run to start the game before making it a 2-0 contest as a run came home on a wild pitch in the top of the second. An RBI double in the visitor's third gave Transylvania a 3-0 advantage.
Scranton got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) came home on an RBI groundout by Price, but the Royals were unable to mount a rally.
Zinn, Rentzheimer, Brogan, and Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) had Scranton's four hits in the loss to the Pioneers with Zinn connected on a double.
Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) tossed a complete game for the Royals, striking out four batters while yielding three runs on seven hits.
The Royals continue their Spring Break trip on Monday, taking on Ripon at 9:00 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest against Minnesota-Morris.
