The University of Scranton softball team opened Magis Field in style on Saturday, sweeping a non-doubleheader from Cazenovia. Playing on their new home diamond at the Quinn Athletics Campus, the Royals defeated the Wildcats by scores of 9-3 and 7-0 to extend their win streak to 10 games while also boosting their record to 12-2 heading into Sunday's Landmark Conference opener against Juniata.
Senior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) added to the history of the day by becoming Scranton's all-time leader in wins by her pitcher, claiming her 39th career victory in the circle in the opener. Rentzheimer moved past Sue Moore, whose previous record of 38 wins stood since 1984.
In Saturday's opener, Scranton used a six-run third inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit on its way to the 9-3 victory in the first-ever game on Magis Field.
Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) scored the first run in Magis Field history, beating a throw home after Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) grounded out in the bottom of the first.
Cazenovia (6-10) went ahead on a two-run home run in the top of the third, but the Royals answered in a big way in the home half of the frame, plating six runs on four hits and three walks. Molly Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) tied the game by coming home on a double-steal before Anna Price (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) hit an RBI single to put Scranton back in front.
Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and Duffy followed with two-run singles to give the Royals a 7-2 advantage.
Zinn scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and Duffy drove in Scranton's final run of the contest with a triple to the gap in right center the following inning.
Rentzheimer earned her historic win by striking out nine batters while yielding three runs on nine hits in the complete game effort.
Duffy went 2-3 with three RBI, Price added two hits, and Donnelly drove in a pair of runs to lead Scranton's offense in the win in the opener.
Sweeney helped her own cause in the bottom of the first, bringing home Duffy with an RBI groundout for the first run of the contest.
Brianna Lehr (Byram Township, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) came home on a passed ball in the home second before Price delivered a two-run single to extend Scranton's lead to 4-0.
Duffy hit a two-run single to center in the fourth inning before Rentzheimer drove in Morgan Briggs (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke) with a double in the bottom of the fifth to close out the scoring.
The seven runs were more than enough for Sweeney and Dowdell. Sweeney earned the win by pitching five shutout innings, allowing just a leadoff single to start the game, while striking out six batters. Dowdell closed out the game with two no-hit innings while picking up one K.
Duffy and Rentzheimer both went 2-3 at the plate with Duffy driving in a pair of runs. Price also added two RBI in the contest while Lehr scored twice for the Royals.
Scranton will open Landmark Conference play on Sunday with a doubleheader against Juniata starting at 1:00 p.m. at Magis Field.
