Freshmen Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) had big weeks to help The University of Scranton softball team go 6-0. As a result, they have been named the Landmark Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Duffy started all six games at catcher and went 13-for-21 (.619) with four doubles, a triple, seven RBIs, seven runs and three stolen bases. On Friday, she went a combined 5-for-7 with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs and stolen base in a doubleheader sweep at Hunter (9-1 and 8-1).
On Saturday in the Royals' first game at their new field, Magis Field, Duffy went 4-for-6 with a double, triple, five RBIs, two runs and a stolen base in a sweep of Cazenovia (9-3 and 7-0). And on Sunday, she went 4-for-8 with a double, three runs and a stolen base as Scranton opened Landmark Conference play with 10-2 and 4-1 wins over Juniata.
For the season, Duffy is hitting .460 with eight doubles, a triple, 17 runs and eight RBIs.
Sweeney went 3-0 on the mound, winning a game in each of the team's three doubleheaders. In the second game against Hunter, she went five innings in an 8-1 win, allowing a run on five hits and four walks. In the second game against Cazenovia, Sweeney worked the first five innings, allowing no runs on one hit and a walk while striking out six. And in the final game against Juniata, she went the distance, allowing a run on two hits and four walks while striking out two.
Sweeney also had a big week at the plate, going 6-for-18 (.333) with a double, three home runs, seven RBIs, six runs and two stolen bases. She homered in both games of the doubleheader against Juniata on Sunday and added one in the second game at Hunter on Friday.
For the season, Sweeney is 6-1 on the mound with a 1.07 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 46 innings. At the plate, she is hitting .298 with four doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and nine runs.
The softball team (14-2, 2-0 Landmark) returns to action on Tuesday when the Royals visit Susquehanna for a Landmark Conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
