SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After dropping an 11-1, five-inning decision in the first game of a Landmark Conference softball doubleheader at Susquehanna on Tuesday, The University of Scranton bounced back for a 1-0 victory in the nightcap to earn a split of the twinbill with the River Hawks.
Scranton moves to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play while Susquehanna is 13-9 (3-3 Landmark) this spring.
In Tuesday's opener, Susquehanna came out firing on all cylinders, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control from the start on its way to snapped Scranton's 12-game winning streak.
The River Hawks sent 12 batters to the plate in their first at-bats and used nine hits and one hit batter to take an 8-0 lead.
Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) put Scranton on the board in the visitor's second by leading off the inning with her fourth home run of the season, and third dinger in as many games, on a shot over the left field fence.
Susquehanna answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame though to open up an 11-1 advantage which would close out the scoring in game one as the River Hawks scored the run-rule decision.
Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) suffered just her second loss of the season after surrendering eight runs to start the game before being relieved by Dowdell, who was charged with three runs on four hits while picking up two strikeouts in the final 3.1 innings.
In Tuesday's nightcap, Scranton scored the game's only run in the top of the first inning and Sweeney made it stand as the Royals posted their fifth shutout victory of the season.
Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) hit a two-out single in the first inning of game two and moved up a base on a base hit from Sweeney. Anna Price (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) followed with Scranton's third straight single to drive in Zinn to give Scranton the early lead.
From there, Sweeney and Royals' defense took over to prevent Susquehanna from pushing across the tying run. The River Hawks put a runner into scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but Sweeney worked out of potential trouble every time.
Zinn finished the game 3-4 at the plate with a double and the only run of the contest while Kaitlyn Brogan (Oreland, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) added a pair of hits.
Sweeney improved to 7-1 on the season while lowering her ERA to 0.92 on the season, scattering six hits – all singles – and walking one while picking up four strikeouts in the contest.
Scranton will play a non-conference doubleheader at Misericordia on Thursday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. in Dallas, Pa.
