University of Scranton softball standout Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) enjoyed an outstanding freshman season both at the plate and in the circle this past spring.  For her efforts, she has been honored as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-Atlantic Region selection as a utility player.

Sweeney is just the second player in Scranton history to earn NFCA All-Region honors, joining Annie Zeleniak, who claimed All-Region accolades in 2011.

Sweeney broke onto the scene in a big way this season, earning Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Landmark Conference honors as a pitcher prior to collecting All-Region accolades.

At the plate, Sweeney batted a team-leading .386 with a .689 slugging percentage and .460 on-base percentage, also team-highs. She totaled 51 hits including 10 home runs and 10 doubles while amassing 35 RBI and scoring 31 runs.  Sweeney finished the year ranked in the top-10 in the Landmark Conference in hits, runs, doubles, home runs, RBI, walks, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.

In the circle, Sweeney made 23 starts and posted an 18-4 record with a 1.88 ERA.  She struck out 105 batters in 145.1 innings pitched and held opponents to a .224 batting average while spinning 16 complete games.  Sweeney finished the year ranked second in the Landmark Conference in wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched and third in complete games, ERA, and strikeouts per seven innings.

Sweeney set a new Scranton records for pitching victories and games started during the season, and ranked second in innings pitched, strikeouts, and opponent batting average while tying for second in pitching appearances.  At the plate, she had the second most home runs in a season, ranked third in total bases, fifth in RBI, and tied for the fifth most hits in a season in Scranton history.

Sweeney, who was the only player from the Landmark Conference to earn First Team All-Atlantic Region honors this spring, was one of 360 players chosen for the 2018 NFCA Division III All-Region softball teams. The All-Region squad is comprised of three 15-player teams in each of the country's eight NCAA regions.

All-Region players are nominated and selected by NFCA member coaches in each of the eight Division III regions. First team All-Region choices are eligible for selection to the NFCA All-America team, which will be announced the evening of May 23 online at NFCA.org and in person at the NCAA Division III Championship banquet in Oklahoma City.
