LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Coming off an outstanding freshman season for The University of Scranton softball team, sophomore Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) has been named to the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year watch list, which was announced by the organization on Monday morning.
Sweeney is one of 50 student-athletes from around the nation to be named to the Player of the Year watch list by the NFCA. The list is compiled annually by the NFCA's Division III All-America committee. The list will subsequently be cut to 25 and 10 as the season progresses, before the winner is chosen following the completion of the NCAA Championship.
In 2018, Sweeney put together one of the best seasons in Scranton program history, on her way to earning NFCA Third Team All-American honors to become the first Royals softball player to be named an All-American ever.
The Landmark Conference's Rookie of the Year, Sweeney started all 44 games last season for Scranton, batting a team-leading .386 with a .689 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base percentage. She went on to club 51 hits, 10 home runs and 10 doubles, ending the year as the team-leader in RBI with 35.
In the pitching circle, Sweeney was just as impressive, posting an 18-4 record in 23 starts, with a 1.88 ERA and 105 strikeouts. Overall, she tossed three solo shutouts, combined to post another three shutouts, and tossed 16 complete games, all while holding opponents to just a .224 average for the year.
Sweeney would also go on to earn both Landmark Conference First Team honors as a pitcher, while also taking NFCA First Team All-Atlantic Region accolades, as well.
