LEESBURG, Fla. - Sophomore Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout in the pitching circle, leading The University of Scranton softball team to a 3-0 win over Mount Union on Monday as the Royals continue their slate of Spring Break games in Florida.

In Scranton's second game of the day over North Park, the Royals dropped a 7-2 decision. With the split, the Royals are 4-2 on the year.

Against Mount Union, Scranton scored all three of their runs in the second inning, as Scranton first scored two runs on a throwing error by Mount Union with the bases loaded. On the play, sophomores Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) came home to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.

Scranton's last run was scored by freshman Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area), who was knocked home on an RBI groundout by junior Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) to give the Royals a 3-0 lead.

That was all the run support Dowdell needed to get the W, as she was terrific in her complete game, two-hit shutout. Dowdell, who is now 2-0 on the year, fanned seven in the victory and walked just one batter, as the shutout win was the first of her career at Scranton.

In the North Park game, however, the Royals couldn't get much going offensively, as they fell behind, 5-0, in the top of the fifth inning. Despite scoring twice in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the deficit down to three (5-2), those were the only runs the Royals could muster on the day, as North Park added two more in the top of the seventh to pull away.

In the defeat, junior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Alich had an RBI. In the pitching circle, Sweeney took her first loss of the year (2-1), as she allowed seven runs on seven hits while striking out eight.

The University of Scranton softball team returns to action on Wednesday, as they take on Ursinus at 9 a.m., then Bridgewater State at 1:30 p.m.
