Sophomore Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) of The University of Scranton softball team enjoyed an outstanding week over the past seven days, leading the Royals to five wins in six games. As a result of her performance, she has been named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week.
Sweeney recorded 13 hits in 19 at-bats last week for a .684 batting average in Scranton's 5-1 week. She had six extra-base hits including three home runs and three doubles while racking up 17 RBI and scoring 10 runs.
Sweeney had at least two hits while driving in at least one run and scoring at least once in all six of the Royals contests. She posted a trio of three RBI efforts and capped her week by going 5-for-6 with nine RBI, four runs scored, and two home runs including a grand slam on Sunday as Scranton opened conference play by sweeping a doubleheader at Juniata.
Sweeney also pitched in three games during the week, striking out 20 batters in 20.1 innings of work. She threw two complete games and picked up the win in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Juniata and finished the week with a 4.18 ERA, allowing just three earned runs in her final two outings of the week.
For the season, Sweeney is batting .400 with 20 hits including five home runs and five doubles while amassing 22 RBI and scoring 17 runs. She also boasts an .800 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage. In the pitching circle, she holds a 4-3 record with a 3.22 ERA while striking out 49 batters in 54.1 innings pitched.
Monday's award marks the fourth time in Sweeney's career that she has earned weekly accolades from the Landmark Conference.
Sweeney and the Royals (11-5, 2-0 Landmark) return to the diamond tonight when they host Cedar Crest in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. at Magis Field.
