SCRANTON - Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) struck out a career-high 12 batters in a game one win (5-3), then The University of Scranton softball team finished off a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Hazleton with a 10-2 win in five innings in game two on Monday at Magis Field.
With the doubleheader sweep in what was the final home games of the 2019 season for the Royals, Scranton improved to 25-11 overall.
Game One: Scranton 5, Penn State Hazleton 3 | Box Score
In the first game of the afternoon, Scranton opened up a 3-0 lead after three innings, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI double by Sweeney, then scoring another in the third on an RBI single by freshman Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area).
But, in the top of the fourth, Penn State Hazleton attacked back, scoring three runs to tie the game up at 3-3 after three and a half innings. After a scoreless bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, the Royals took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) roped an RBI single to give Scranton the lead back at 4-3.
In the sixth, the Royals added an insurance run on an RBI triple by sophomore Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) to go up two into the final inning, which was more than enough run support for Sweeney, who finished the win off after retiring three batters in a row after allowing a lead-off double in the seventh.
Overall in game one, Zinn had a big effort at the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Molly Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock), meanwhile, finished the game going 2-for-3 while recording her 100th career hit in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the pitching circle, it was a career day for Sweeney, who fanned a career-best 12 in the complete game win to push her record on the year to 11-6, while allowing just one earned run on the day.
Game Two: Scranton 10, Penn State Hazleton 2 (Five Innings) | Box Score
The second game saw the Royals complete the doubleheader sweep and their home slate for the season with a dominant eight-run win in five innings.
As it was in game one, Scranton scored first, as freshman Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) roped an RBI double, then scored later in the inning on a throwing error to give the Royals an early 2-0 lead.
Penn State Hazleton, however, tied the game up with a pair of runs in the top of the second to make it a 2-2 game entering the third inning. But, in the bottom of that frame, the Royals broke the game open, scoring five runs to take a 7-2 lead after three innings.
After holding Penn State Hazleton scoreless over the next two innings, Scranton tacked on a single run in the bottom of the fourth, then scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. In the final inning, freshman Meghan Duzick (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) had an RBI single, while sophomore Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) scored the game-ending run on an error.
Overall in the second game, Alich was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and one run scored in the win, while Indelicato went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Zinn continued to swing a hot bat in game two, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Donnelly finished 1-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.
In the pitching circle in game two, Dowdell earned the win to move to 14-4 on the year, allowing a pair of unearned runs on four hits, while striking out six in five innings of work.
The University of Scranton softball team returns to action on Thursday, as they travel to Muhlenberg for their final regular season doubleheader of the 2019 regular season. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
