With the Winter solstice a mere 10 days away, The University of Scranton softball team is thinking about warmer, sunnier days, as the Royals announced their 2020 schedule on Wednesday that includes nine doubleheaders on Magis Field at the Quinn Athletics Campus.
The defending Landmark Conference champions and a 2019 NCAA Division III Championship participant, the Royals (who were 32-15 last year) kick off the 2020 season at home on Mar. 7, as they host NYU in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
Eight days later, the Royals head south for spring break, as they will play eight games over four days in Clermont, Fla. After finishing up on Mar. 19, there won't be too long of a break for Scranton, as they come right back to Magis Field on Mar. 22 to open Landmark play for the year with a doubleheader against Juniata.
The rest of the season will see the Royals take on their usual slate of Landmark Conference foes, along with several regional and local opponents.
At home in Landmark play, Scranton will host Drew (Apr. 4), and Elizabethtown (Apr. 25), but will play the three teams that joined them in the Landmark playoffs a season ago on the road throughout the spring - Catholic (Mar. 28), Susquehanna (Apr. 5) and Moravian (Apr. 19)
Scranton will also play Cedar Crest (Mar. 30), Hunter (Apt. 8), Muhlenberg (Apr. 9), Marywood (Apr. 13) and King's (Apr. 20) all at home.
The Landmark Conference playoffs will begin on May 1 and run through May 3 and will be hosted by the school who finishes with the best regular in Landmark regular season play for the year.
In 2020, the Royals will once again be led by head coach Mia Collarini Wascura, who enters her ninth year as the leader of the program. Collarini Wascura will have 12 players returning from last season, paced by senior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), who was an NFCA Third Team All-American in 2019 after batting .459 and finishing the year with a Landmark Conference record 72 hits.
In the pitching circle, junior Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) returns to lead the staff after posting a 14-8 record last season with a 2.79 ERA and 111 strikeouts. Sweeney went on to earn NFCA All-Region Honors, and All-Landmark Conference first-team accolades, as well.
