For the second time in her career (and first since the 2018 season) junior Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) of The University of Scranton softball team was named the Landmark Conference's Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 8, 2020, on Monday afternoon.
Sweeney earned this week's award from the Landmark after helping Scranton kick-off their 2020 campaign in style on Sunday, as the Royals swept a doubleheader from NYU at Magis Field by scores of 9-1 (in five innings) and 9-5.
In the first game of the double-dip, Sweeney allowed just one run on three hits, while fanning four to secure her first win in the pitching circle on the year. In game two, Sweeney came in relief and was just as impressive, finishing off a four-run win after not allowing a run (on just one hit) in 2 and one-third of work to nab a save. The save was the first of Sweeney's already great career at Scranton, as well.
At the plate in both games, Sweeney was just as impressive, scoring a run in game one, while going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in game two. Sweeney also scored three times in the second game victory, as well.
Sweeney and the rest of The University of Scranton softball team returns to action on Sunday, as they begin their 2020 Spring Break slate in Clermont, Fla. with games against Fredonia (at 3 PM) and Benedictine (at 5:15 PM).
