University of Scranton women's basketball coach Trevor Woodruff announced Friday morning that seniors Noelle Alicea (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) and Jaclyn Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), and junior Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) will serve as team captains this season.
Alicea returns after she moved into the starting lineup last season and provided an offensive boost by averaging 8.2 points while shooting 31.4 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line. She also added 2.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 26.8 minutes per game.
Gantz was a key contributor off the bench last season, providing solid defense while contributing 3.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 17.9 minutes per game.
Payonk was one of the top all-around players in the Landmark Conference last season, earning second-team all-conference honors. She finished the season averaging 9.8 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. She shot 44.8 percent from the field and 82.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Royals are coming off a 2014-15 season in which they went 24-4 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the third straight season they have made the NCAA Tournament and the 28th time in program history.
Scranton opens the season on Saturday, Nov. 14, when they take on The College of New Jersey at 4 p.m. in the Morgan Stanley Tip-Off Tournament at DeSales in Center Valley, Pa.
