CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Senior guard Noelle Alicea (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) and freshman guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) had 22 points each and The University of Scranton women's basketball team used a big third quarter to defeat DeSales, 67-50, in the championship game of the Morgan Stanley Tip-Off Tournament at DeSales.
The Lady Royals (2-0) broke away from a 24-24 tie at halftime by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs (1-1), 28-13, in the third quarter. Mann had 16 of her 22 points in the quarter, and Alicea added eight points in the decisive period.
Alicea added five rebounds, four assists and three steals en route to being named tournament MVP. She had eight points, 10 rebounds and three assists in a 59-53 win over The College of New Jersey on Saturday.
Junior forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) added 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team. She had a team-high 22 points in Saturday's win.
Mann finished with eight rebounds, four assists and a steal, and senior guard Jaclyn Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) also had seven rebounds and three assists in the victory.
Scranton, which never trailed in the contest, shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the field, including 5-for-12 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range. Mann and Alicea combined to go 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. The Lady Royals won the rebounding battle, 40-35, and committed 16 turnovers while scoring 30 points in the paint.
The Lady Royals will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 21, when they host Wilkes at 3 p.m. in the home opener in the Long Center.
