Junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) had back-to-back double digit scoring games on the week and recorded one of the better games in program history on the glass for the University of Scranton women's basketball team at Juniata on Saturday.
For her efforts, Payonk has been named the Landmark Conference's Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the period ending December 6, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. This marks the second time in her career she has captured an Athlete of the Week award, as she also won it during the 2013-14 season.
Payonk got her week started with an all-around performance in a 74-55 victory at King's on Monday, scoring 14 points, while pulling down seven rebounds, and dishing out seven assists.
In the Juniata game, Payonk scored a season-high 18 points in a tough 53-41 win on the road in the Lady Royals' conference season opener. But, it was Payonk's performance on the glass that was an all-timer, as she snatched a career-high 21 rebounds in the victory.
The 21-rebound performance for Payonk matched the fourth best in a game for a Lady Royal in program history in the category and was also the best performance on the glass by a Scranton player since 1994.
For the year, Payonk is averaging 10.7 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per contest.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, hosting Merchant Marine in a Landmark Conference match-up inside the John Long Center. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
