For the second consecutive week (and for the third time on the 2015-16 season), University of Scranton junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) was named the Landmark Conference's Athlete of the Week for the period ending January 17, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Payonk, who earned the award for the fourth time in her career on Monday, took the honor off the heels of a historic performance in a 70-52 win over Catholic on Saturday afternoon inside the Long Center.
In the victory, Payonk recorded just the third triple-double in a game in Lady Royals history, scoring 14 points, while adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The triple-double was a first for a Scranton player since Katie Dougherty accomplished it on January 27, 2003.
For the year, Payonk is second on the team in scoring average at 13.1 points per game and leading the squad in rebounding averaging 9.1 'boards per contest. Nationally, Payonk is 12th in total assists in all of NCAA Division III at 87 and 16th in the assists per game category at 5.4 per contest. She is also fourth in free throw shooting percentage at 89.6 percent for the year.
Payonk and the rest of the sixth-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday night, hosting Moravian in a battle of the top two teams in the Landmark Conference standings. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the John Long Center.
