Junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted a big week in two victories for the Lady Royals women's basketball team over Drew and Elizabethtown, and for her efforts, she has been named the University of Scranton's Athlete of the Week for the period ending January 31.
For Payonk, this is the third time in her career she has been named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week, earning the award previously on Dec. 16, 2013 and Dec. 22, 2014.
First on Wednesday against Drew, Payonk only played 18 minutes total, but made her presence felt, scoring 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting in a dominating 73-42 victory for the Lady Royals on the road.
Payonk followed that up with an all-around performance in a 78-59 win at Elizabethtown on Saturday, ending with 15 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists in the victory that moved the Lady Royals to 19-0 overall on the season and 10-0 in the Landmark Conference.
Overall for the year, Payonk is averaging 12.8 points a contest, leading the team in rebounding at 9.7 'boards a game and assists with 108. Nationally, Payonk is 13th in all of NCAA Division III in total assists and 16th in assists per game at 5.3.
Payonk and the rest of the unbeaten and fifth-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Moravian for another Landmark Conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
