ATLANTA, Ga. - University of Scranton junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring Ford) added another award on Friday, as she was recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as a Division III All-American Honorable Mention selection.
For Payonk, the selection continues an end of the season award season in which she collected her fair share of accolades.
In all, Payonk was named the Player of the Year by both the Landmark Conference and D3Hoops.com for the Mid-Atlantic Region. Payonk was also a First Team selection on the All-Landmark and D3Hoops.com Mid-Atlantic Region teams, as well.
With earning the WBCA All-American Honorable Mention selection, Payonk joins 19 other Lady Royals all-time in earning at least that distinction in their careers at the University.
In 2015-16, Payonk ended the season with averaging 12.3 points per game, scoring in double figures in 23 of the 31 games Scranton played in. Throughout the course of the year, Payonk posted two triple-doubles, had 12 double-doubles, and was one of the best passers of the ball in the entire country, ending the season ranked fifth in all of Division III in total assists (178).
Most importantly, Payonk was one of the Lady Royals' leaders throughout a historic season, that saw the team rattle off a program best 30-0 start before falling in the Elite Eight to Tufts last Saturday.
The junior led the Lady Royals to the 2015-16 Landmark Conference Title and into the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, the first time Scranton went that far in tournament play since 2009. By finishing 30-1, the Lady Royals became the first Scranton team to win 30 games in a campaign since the 1992-93 season.
