Senior guards Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) and Julia Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) have been named captains for The University of Scranton women's basketball team for the 2018-19 season, head coach Trevor Woodruff announced on Monday.
Mann and Gantz return to lead a Lady Royals squad that is coming off its third straight Landmark Conference championship and a trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Scranton finished last season with a 28-2 record and ranked 10th in the D3hoops.com Top 25. It was the program's fifth straight season of 24 or more victories.
Mann has been highly decorated in her first three seasons as a Lady Royal. Last season alone, she was named honorable mention All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and third-team All-American by D3hoops.com. She was the D3hoops.com Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year, the Landmark Conference Player of the Year and the Landmark Conference Championship MVP.
And just last week, Mann was named a preseason first-team All-American by D3hoops.com. She enters her senior season with 180 career 3-pointers, two shy of setting a new Lady Royals career record. Her .840 free throw percentage ranks second in program history, her .371 3-point percentage is fourth, her 309 assists are 13th and her 1,213 points rank 18th.
Gantz transferred to Scranton following her freshman year, then sat out her sophomore year while recovering from an injury. She returned last season to play in 21 games, including two starts, averaging 4.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists while making 11 of 40 3-point attempts.
The Lady Royals will open their 2018-19 season on Friday, Nov. 16, when they take on King's in the Cross-County Challenge at Marywood University at 6 p.m.
